Our Story

Greetings, I'm Michael Kyberd, and I consider myself immensely fortunate. Why? Because I'm living my passion every day. Kyberd Hills is born of my deep love for wine, particularly the nuanced delights of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Yet, none of this would have materialized without the pivotal role of Nicolette (formerly Hills) – our wines are a testament to a beautiful love story.

My journey into winemaking was guided by remarkable mentors, including the esteemed Dan Hills. The tale is a lengthy one, and if we ever have the pleasure of meeting, I'd relish the opportunity to share it in full detail. It was during a visit to England, at Dan's sister's residence in London, where I first met Nicolette. They say you just know when it's right, and within six months, Nics had relocated to Australia, and we were exchanging vows.

That pivotal moment was over 15 years ago. Since then, I've dedicated nearly three decades to crafting wines on the Mornington Peninsula, initially as the Chief Winemaker for a prominent local brand and later as a contract winemaker for some rather splendid clientele.

My affection for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has only deepened over time. The Mornington Peninsula, with its serene autumns, bestows upon these grape varieties a wealth of intricate flavours and naturally vibrant acidity, making it an exceptional terroir for their cultivation.

As any culinary artist will attest, the quality of ingredients is paramount. The Tempranillo was for us a wonderful surprise.

It is our sincere desire that you savour our wines with those dear to you. Whether enjoyed immediately or cellared for a special occasion, our Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Tempranillo will mature and build complexity over a decade or more.

Kyberd Hills isn't merely a geographical reference; it symbolizes our union. While "Kyberd" is said to mean "dagger" in Danish (a nod to its Danish roots before journeying through English shores to Australian soil), our icon represents the fusion of precision and passion, science and emotion, knowledge and love.

Each sip of our wines embodies this essence. It’s little wonder they bring boundless joy to so many, including ourselves.
